4-Day Mt. Rinjani Summit Trek: Conquer the Volcano’s Challenges and Breathtaking Views

A hiker’s 4-day journey to Mt. Rinjani’s summit: challenges, triumphs, and breathtaking views of the volcano.

Ready to Go?

With boundless enthusiasm and minimal preparation, our storyteller embarked on a four-day trek up Mt. Rinjani, one of Indonesia’s most iconic and demanding volcano hikes. Their journey, organized by Visit Mount Rinjani, would take them to breathtaking landmarks, test their physical and mental limits, and leave them with memories of camaraderie and triumph.

Day One: From Registration to the Crater Rim

The journey began with an early breakfast and a quick medical check to ensure readiness for the challenge. After passing the registration, the group piled into a truck to reach the starting point. Spirits were high, and supplies were loaded onto the backs of porters, who would later astound everyone with their ability to carry over 30 kilograms of gear up the steep trails in nothing but flip-flops.

The first stretch of the hike, winding through lush jungle terrain, was marked by rolling hills and the occasional flat respite. The group reached Post Two, where they enjoyed a surprisingly gourmet lunch of fresh fruit, rice, vegetables, and chicken. The meal provided much-needed energy for the next leg of the climb, as the inclines became steeper and the air cooler.

By late afternoon, they reached the Crater Rim Camp. The campsite, perched at a staggering altitude, offered panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and a glimpse of the summit. “We made it,” the hiker exclaimed, overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the setting sun casting golden hues over the rugged landscape. Dinner consisted of a hearty vegetable soup paired with chicken and eggs, a comforting end to an arduous day.

Day Two: The Summit Push

Rising at 1:30 AM, the hikers prepared for the summit attempt. The pre-dawn chill bit through their layers as they fueled up with hot noodles and tea before setting off under the light of headlamps. The trek began steeply and only grew more challenging.

As the group ascended, the wind picked up, reaching speeds of 20 to 30 miles per hour. The loose volcanic gravel made every step precarious, forcing the hikers to take two steps forward and slide one step back. The mental toll of this unrelenting terrain was evident. “This is the hardest hike of my life,” the hiker admitted, fighting exhaustion and frustration with each step.

Reaching the summit just as the first rays of sunlight broke through the horizon, the group was met with an awe-inspiring view of the surrounding islands and the crater lake below. Despite the grueling ascent, the triumph of standing at 3,726 meters above sea level made it all worthwhile.

The Descent: A Different Kind of Challenge

After a brief celebration at the summit, it was time to head back down—a task no less daunting than the climb. The descent began with a treacherous rock slide, where the gravel shifted unpredictably underfoot. “Sliding down loose dirt at a 45-degree angle was terrifying,” the hiker recounted.

Back at the Crater Rim Camp, the group enjoyed a well-earned breakfast of fresh watermelon, pineapple, and rice, savoring the accomplishment of conquering Mt. Rinjani’s summit. However, the journey was far from over, as the trek continued toward the volcanic lake and the hot springs for the next phase of their adventure.

Reflections on an Unforgettable Trek

For this hiker, the Mt. Rinjani Summit trek was not just a physical challenge but a mental test of resilience and determination. The experience highlighted the beauty and unpredictability of nature, from the windswept summit to the serene hot springs nestled by the volcanic lake.

For anyone considering hiking Mt. Rinjani, they offer this advice: “Prepare as much as you can, respect the mountain, and remember that the hardest journeys often lead to the most rewarding destinations.”

Their adventure with Visit Mount Rinjani proved to be as enriching as it was grueling, a testament to the allure and power of this majestic volcano.
