Angie and Rick’s Private 3-Day Mt. Rinjani Trek: Summit, Crater Rim, and Hot Springs

Angie and Rick's private trek to Mt. Rinjani’s summit, Crater Rim, and volcanic lake highlights strength, humor, and endurance.

Ready to Go?

Angie and Rick, the spirited duo behind The Active Adventurers, took on the formidable challenge of Mt. Rinjani with equal parts determination and humor. Their trek, part of their three-day, two-night journey, was a test of endurance, strength, and mental resilience, and they emerged with incredible stories, aching muscles, and a profound sense of achievement.

The Start: A Private Trek on an Iconic Mountain

Their journey began with a private tour, a rarity in the post-pandemic era. Led by their guide Morris, Angie and Rick were the only participants in what used to be a group of 40 hikers before the pandemic. While the exclusivity felt bittersweet, it allowed for a personalized experience. As they prepared, the couple anticipated sore muscles and lactic acid buildup but remained excited about the adventure.

“Just go at your own pace,” Morris advised, “and concentrate on every step.” The couple took his words to heart as they braced for the loose rocks and steep paths that awaited them.

Day One: Climbing to the Crater Rim

The trek began in earnest with a gradual ascent toward Pos 1. The couple quickly learned that hiking Mt. Rinjani was no leisurely walk. Within the first hour, they were drenched in sweat under the hot Lombok sun, pushing themselves to maintain a steady rhythm. By the time they reached Pos 2, Angie and Rick were two hours in, surrounded by lush landscapes and mischievous monkeys.

The porters, carrying camping gear and food, were a source of inspiration. “These guys do this every day in flip-flops,” Rick marveled. Their strength and ease became a recurring theme throughout the trek, underscoring the monumental effort required to climb Mt. Rinjani.

Lunch at Pos 3 provided a much-needed break. Over fresh fruit and Oreos, the couple regrouped before tackling the increasingly steep terrain. They climbed for hours, navigating tree-root steps and rocky outcrops. Angie affectionately nicknamed Rick “Spider-Man” as they clambered up a particularly tricky section.

As the clouds rolled in, they finally reached the Crater Rim Camp. The sight of the crater lake surrounded by misty peaks made the grueling day worthwhile. Dinner was a comforting meal of hot soup and rice, which the couple enjoyed as they prepared for an early summit push.

Day Two: The Summit Trek

At 2:30 AM, Angie and Rick awoke to darkness and biting cold. Armed with headlamps and trekking poles, they began their ascent to the summit. The trail was a steep, ashy slope, with each step forward feeling like two steps back. The volcanic scree challenged their resolve, but they pressed on, driven by the promise of the sunrise.

By 6:00 AM, they reached the summit at 3,726 meters. The view was otherworldly: the crater lake bathed in soft morning light, clouds drifting beneath their feet, and Lombok stretching out in all directions. Despite the cold, Angie and Rick celebrated with cookies, marveling at the effort it took to get there. “This is what we trained for,” Angie said, her voice filled with pride.

The Long Descent and Hot Springs

Descending from the summit was both exhilarating and exhausting. Sliding down the volcanic ash felt like skiing, a stark contrast to the painstaking climb. After returning to camp for a quick rest, the couple continued their journey to the lake, navigating steep paths and rope-assisted sections.

The lake and nearby hot springs provided a brief respite. Soaking in the warm water eased their sore muscles, though rain soon cut their relaxation short. Angie and Rick laughed through the downpour, embracing the unpredictable nature of trekking Mt. Rinjani.

Day Three: The Final Push

On the last day, the couple faced a six-hour descent back to civilization. The previous day’s rain had left the trail muddy, and their already tired legs made the journey feel endless. Despite the physical toll, they found humor in their exhaustion. “I feel like fried chicken,” Angie joked, as they trudged through the jungle.

By late morning, they reached the trailhead, greeted by their guide and porters. Angie and Rick took a moment to reflect on their adventure, tipping the porters generously and thanking Morris for his guidance. “Would we do it again?” Angie mused. “Probably not, but we’re so glad we did it.”
