Climbing Mt. Rinjani: Laura’s Unforgettable Adventure

Laura's Mt. Rinjani trek was a journey of grit and awe. From the challenging summit climb to the breathtaking crater views, she conquered the volcano and celebrated her resilience.

Ready to Go?

Laura, an intrepid traveler and meticulous planner, recently embarked on a journey that pushed her physical limits and rewarded her with some of the most breathtaking views she’d ever seen. Known for her love of organizing trips and diving into adventures, Laura set her sights on climbing Mt. Rinjani, a grueling trek up Indonesia’s second-highest volcano.

A Grueling Start Under the Sembalun Skies

The trek began in Sembalun Village, a starting point that promised sweeping plains, idyllic scenery, and the towering peak of Mt. Rinjani looming in the distance. A hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs and tea kickstarted Laura’s journey, but the idyllic beginning was short-lived.

Under the blazing sun, the flat plains quickly gave way to the steep ridges leading up to the crater rim. Laura felt the heat prickling against her skin as her group trudged along, passing through open landscapes that offered no respite. “It was surreal,” Laura later remarked, “seeing Rinjani in the distance and realizing how far we had to go.”

As the team climbed higher, the blue skies gave way to rolling clouds. The dramatic shift in weather created an eerie atmosphere, with wisps of grey enveloping them. By the time Laura reached the crater rim, she was enveloped in a cold mist that obscured the view of Segara Anak Lake below. The first night at camp was spent bundled in layers, sipping hot tea, and waiting for the clouds to clear.

Racing the Clouds to the Summit

Laura woke at 1:45 a.m. on the second day, nerves buzzing as she prepared for the summit attempt. Under a sky freckled with stars, she pulled on every layer of clothing she had brought, wrapped a scarf around her neck, and secured her headlamp.

The ascent was relentless. The volcanic dust underfoot turned every step into a struggle—two steps forward, one step sliding back. Laura’s legs burned, and the biting cold added another layer of difficulty. Despite the challenge, the glow of distant headlamps from other trekkers provided a sense of camaraderie.

Reaching the summit at sunrise was a moment of pure euphoria. From 3,726 meters above sea level, Laura looked out at the surrounding islands of Bali, Sumbawa, and Flores, with the sun casting a warm glow over the crater lake below. “The sunrise from the summit of Rinjani was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced,” she said.

The descent back to camp was just as challenging, but Laura was motivated by the promise of breakfast. The team’s porters served banana pancakes and hot tea—simple fare that felt like a feast after the summit attempt.

Rest and Reflection by the Crater Lake

The journey to Segara Anak Lake, nestled in Rinjani’s crater, was both treacherous and exhilarating. The path was steep, but the promise of soaking in natural hot springs kept Laura moving. Upon reaching the lake, she was greeted by the serene sight of its shimmering blue waters and the small volcanic cone of Gunung Barujari rising from its center.

Laura and her group spent the afternoon soaking in the hot springs, a rejuvenating experience that eased their aching muscles. The porters, meanwhile, set up camp on a private stretch of the lake’s shoreline—a surprise that left Laura speechless. “I couldn’t believe how lucky we were,” she said. “Camping right by the water with a view of the volcano was like something out of a dream.”

Descending Through the Jungle

The final day of Laura’s trek took her through the lush jungle on the outer slopes of Mt. Rinjani. The dense canopy provided much-needed shade as the group navigated steep descents, crossing over tree roots and rocky terrain. Despite sore legs and exhaustion, Laura found herself marveling at the jungle’s beauty, listening to the calls of birds and the rustling of leaves.

Finally, the team emerged at the base of the mountain, where a signpost marked the end of the trek. Laura couldn’t help but smile as she shared high-fives with her guide and porters. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” she admitted, “but also the most rewarding.”

A Journey Worth Every Step

For Laura, trekking Mt. Rinjani was a journey of both physical endurance and profound beauty. The changing landscapes—from barren plains to misty ridges, from volcanic craters to verdant jungles—provided a constant source of awe.

As she reflected on her experience, Laura was grateful not only for the natural wonders but also for the incredible support of her guide and porters. “They carried so much—both physically and emotionally—for us,” she said.

Now back in the comfort of a warm bed and with a hot shower behind her, Laura is already planning her next adventure. But Mt. Rinjani will always hold a special place in her heart—a testament to the power of perseverance and the unmatched beauty of Indonesia’s wild landscapes.
